Take Courage, dear heart!

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” – Philippians 4:6


The uncertainty of our times and brokenness of our world often subjects us to fear, anxiety and worry. Of all human emotions, these are probably the most destructive and not a single person is immune. It is no wonder that “Fear not(Don’t be afraid) is mentioned 365 times in the bible. Our anxieties and worries often stem from misplaced trust during personal afflictions and/or external threats. The world around us is ever-changing, look at our planet’s erratic weather patterns, wars and pending wars, corruption, desolation, human trafficking, terrorism, ominous nuclear weapons, unstable economies, and so on and so on.


Where do you put your trust?

Trusting in anything or anyone but God is misplaced trust because people, events and things are imperfect and temporary. A battle wages within us all and unlike the BC era, where people called on God to help them in physical wars, our modern warfare is predominantly one of a spiritual nature. The weight of anxiety and worry may cause us to act out of character and thwart us from moving forward. However, there is Good News! Faith in God’s supreme, unchanging character, love and Word defends us from the distortion and paralyzing influences of fear, anxiety and worry. Faith in God enables us to be women and men of courage and boldness.

 “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” – Isaiah 41:10


Try these!

Some coping skills to eliminate anxiety, fear and worry:

  • Place your trust in something unchanging i.e. Trust God!

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” – Proverbs 3:5

  • Carve out time. Remove all distractions. Quiet your mind. Now draw into the presence of God. Give Him thanks for all that He has done and for all that He is about to do in your life. Worship Him with your speech and song. Worship is ascribing value and glory to our magnificent, omniscient God. He alone deserves our praise.
  • Embrace anxiety, fear and worry by confessing it to God. List them all and call out each one by name in prayer. We are overcomers through Christ who has given us authority (see Luke 10:19).
  • We must confront our fears head on and put our faith into practice. We confront our fears by acknowledging its existence and taking stock of them in our lives. We need to connect the dots between our fears and current struggles that produce strife in our lives. Often our fears are linked to our needs and desires for people, money, power and other empty dependencies instead of God.
  • Meditate on God’s Word:

“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:7

“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” – Psalms 91:1

 “God is love … There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.” – 1 John 4:18

  • Monitor your self-talk. Pray and ask God to help you focus on: “whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” – Philippians 4:8
  • Recall 2 Timothy 1:7 – “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love and self-discipline.”
